What does it mean to speak visual? To me, the concept is limitless. Why should boundaries be placed with literal words when there’s an abundance of color and definition that needs no auditory explanation? I entitled my piece “Speaking My Language” because my art is a language that anyone can understand. It’s the greatness of the mind and the creative grease that really turns the gears in anyone’s imagination, and that’s where you’ll learn to enjoy, and speak “your own” language. I ask that you take the time to shovel through any madness I can describe my work with and enjoy the simplicity of shapes and colors. I’m constantly fascinated by how much I can push the envelope on color. At one time, I was almost afraid of it. I spent my life coloring lightly, not realizing I wasn’t getting the best impact I could. Envelopes were meant to be pushed, cut, and opened, and using one’s abilities to try and make that happen is simply the best feeling you can derive from creating.
In this project I decided to make a girl, with really no makeup, or jewelry having only her imagination to carry her. She’s an artist, spontaneous in all her creations… but each is created with the intent of moving, whether it be her or her surroundings. Her art is living, and even though there are words underneath to label each object, the words aren’t necessarily defining the action or the feeling. The words could be in a dead language, and everyone, universally would be able to understand or take something from the visual. I really appreciate illustrations like the emoticons, they’re a perfect example of speaking visually. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had bizarre picture battles with friends from other countries, who speak different languages that I can only dream of learning someday. It’s through expressive pieces, icons of universal emotion that we can all come together with our own unique takes and enjoy what we each put on the table. If you're not enjoying what you do, then you're doing something wrong.
